ગુજરાતના ઈતિહાસમાં તો કબીરવડ ઘણા વર્ષોથી પર્યટક સ્થળ તરીકે જાણીતો છે. જો કે એ અલગ વાત છે કે આ કબીર અને વડ વિશેની સાચી માન્યતા કોઈને ખબર નથી. પરંતુ થડ અને વડવાઈઓ વચ્ચે ભેદ પારખી શકાતો નથી તેવા આ વડના વૃક્ષો જોઈને જ પ્રવાસીઓ પાછા ફરે છે.

નર્મદા નદીની વચ્ચોવચ આવેલા ટાપુ પર કબીરવડ સ્થિત છે. શુક્લતીર્થ શિવ મંદરથી નાવમાં બેસીને આ જગ્યાએ પહોંચી શકાય છે. વડની વડવૈયોથી વૃક્ષવાટિકામાં ફેરવાયેલું આ વૃક્ષ સમયાંતરે ૩ કિ.મીના વિસ્તારમાં ફેલાઇ ચૂક્યું છે. સંત કબીર જેઓ વર્ષો સુધી અહીં વસ્યાં હતાં તેમના નામ પરથી આ વડનું નામ કબીરવડ પડ્યું છે. અહીં કબીર મંદિર પણ છે જ્યાં મુલાકાતીઓ અને શ્રદ્ધાળુઓ પ્રાર્થના કરવા આવે છે. કબીરવડ માત્ર ઐતિહાસિક કારણથી લોકો આવતાં નથી પરંતુ અહીંના ભવ્ય વડની આસપાસ ફેલાયેલી અપાર શાંતિ અને પવિત્રતા માણવા આવે છે.

જો કે એક માન્યતા પ્રમાણે આ સ્થળની કથા એવી છે કે ૧૪માં શૈકામાં શુક્લતીર્થ ક્ષેત્રમાં આવેલા મંગલેશ્વરમાં જીવા અને તત્વો નામના બે બ્રાહ્મણ ભાઈઓ રહેતા હતાં. બંન્ને ભાઈઓ ખૂબ જ ધાર્મિક અને ભગવાનના ઉપાસક હતાં. તેમણે વડની એક સૂકી ડાળખી જમીનમાં રોપી અને એવો સંકલ્પ કર્યો હતો કે પુનિત ચરણકમળમાં સ્પર્શથી આ સૂકી ડાળ નવપલ્લિત બને અને તેને કુંપળો ફુટે.

બીર વડ કે જેનો પહેલો અંકુર લગભગ ૫૫૦ વર્ષ પહેલાં ફૂટ્યો હોવાનું આધારભૂત પ્રમાણ મળે છે. ભરૂચથી વીસેક કિલોમીટર છેટે ઉપરવાસ તરફ નર્મદાકિનારે આવેલ છે.

તે વૃક્ષની ઘટાનો ફેલાવો લગભગ ૩.૫ એકર છે. વડવાઇઓ પૈકી મોટી ૩૫૦ અને નાની ૩,૦૦૦ જેટલી છે. એક સમયે કબીર વડના છાંયડામાં ૭,૦૦૦ સૈનિકોએ પડાવ નાખ્યાનો બનાવ નોંધાયો છે.કબીરવડ જવામાટે ભરૂચથી વાયા શુકલતીર્થ થઇ જતા રસ્તા પર આવેલા કબીરમઢી નામના સ્થળ પરથી હોડીમાં બેસી જવું પડે છે.
